U2 revitalized their career with their seventh studio album, Achtung Baby, released via Island Records on 18 November 1991 under the production of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. Spurred by creative stagnation and a critical backlash to 1988’s Rattle and Hum, the Irish rockers boldly incorporated alternative, industrial, and electronic dance music into their signature sound. This shift resulted in a darker, more introspective, and sometimes cynical thematic approach. Vocalist Bono fuelled the record’s raw lyricism by drawing from the painful divorces of close friends, including the band’s own guitarist, the Edge.
